The Maryland Lady Shooting Stars 15U “elite” fell short of winning the Maryland State Championship last weekend. For most teams, earning second place honors is exceptional considering the talented teams who compete in the 15U division. However, for these highly competitive athletes, the loss was extremely disappointing especially after finishing the District Qualifying Tournament (DQT) pool play 3-1 with an average margin of victory of 33 points.
The DQT bracket play was much like pool play. The Super “Sophs” won their first three games by an average margin of 20 points. Against the Columbia Ravens, the Stars used precision and pressure defense to stifle the Ravens’ offense resulting in 52-16 annihilation. This game showcased how dangerous the Stars can be when they play their style of basketball. Their confidence and moxie carried over into the next game where they out dueled the talented Lady Comets by 14 to advanced to the semi-finals.
The semi-finals would test the Stars’ endurance and character. The match up was between the Shooting Stars and Baltimore Starz. With a depleted back court, the Super “Sophs” relied heavily on their transition game and post play. The Stars’ out rebounded their opponent winning the bragging rights and distinguishing themselves as the true Stars (with an s and not a z.) The double digit win advanced them to a rematch with the Lady Terps who also advanced to the championship undefeated.
The championship game was highly anticipated as the Stars and Terps were the predicted favorites. The Terps entered the game undefeated in both pool and bracket play. In fact, they had only been challenged by the OM Tigers throughout the entire DQT. The Stars began the match with the bitter memory of a 16-point loss suffered in pool play. On the big stage, they wanted to show how good they really are. Unfortunately, it would not be there night as the Terps controlled the game from beginning to end. To their credit, the Super “Sophs” at times showed their eliteness; nonetheless, it was not enough as the Terps denied them of the State Championship winning 76-63.
Despite falling one game short, the Maryland Lady Shooting Stars 15U “elite” has many reasons to be proud. They earned their 3rd D-1 bid for AAU National competition. Also, they took one step closer to the elusive State Title. Fortunately for the elite squad, they will have time to heal some of their injuries before their next major competition. We extend our appreciation and a salute to Coach Jamar, his staff, and the Super “Sophs” for their success. This team truly embodies the spirit of commitment and excellence.
