The much heralded Blue Chip Showcase tournament took place on October 3rd-5th at Villanova University, In Philadelphia, PA. In front of a slew of teams and approximately 200 college scouts, the Maryland Lady Shooting Stars 17U demonstrated why they are arguably one of the premier girls AAU basketball programs in the State of Maryland.

Coach Johnny Mack entered the tournament with a diverse team and mixture of talent. He suited three incoming freshmen incoming along with a talented point guard (who traveled all the way from Puerto Rico just to experience Stars’ basketball on “big stage” competition). Even with a mix of talents, Coach Mack’s signature pressure defense and transition basketball were apparent the entire tournament. His girls played with discipline, hustle, intensity, and energy.

From the beginning to end, the Shooting Stars dominated their competition. In their only lost, Coach Mack built an 18 point halftime lead, but succumbed to his opponent by three after an exemplary display of long range shooting. Nonetheless, the Stars level of play and skill set went unmatched throughout the showcase. This was evident by the margin of victories and the college scouts who were busy jotting on their notepads.

Overall, the Blue Chip Showcase proved to be a very successful experience for all of the girls. Seniors had an opportunity to show what they will be bringing to higher learning institutions next fall. Coach Mack’s international players were provided a chance to display their talents here in the United States. Also, the junior talent was able to solidify why scouts will not error in signing her early. In addition, the three freshmen provided a glimpse to opponents and scouts of what to expect from the Maryland Lady Shooting Stars in the immediate future.
